One of the most famous festival in The Island of Gods is Galungan and Kuningan. Galungan signifies the winning of dharma (goodness) against adharma (evil) from the Mayadenawa mythology. It is believed that during the 10 day festival all Gods including the highest of all, Sanghyang Widhi, come to earth. During this time too the spirits of ancestors and late families are believed to return to their homes. Balinese held many rituals and propose offerings to welcome them.
During the festival all around Bali will be decorated by penjor, long bamboo stick curling at the top with ornamentation of fruits, flowers and coconut leaves. Our favorite place to enjoy this festival is countryside such as Ubud and main temples such Besakih and Uluwatu.
The summit of Galungan is Kuningan where spirits and Gods return to their own realm after visiting human being in earth.
A visit to Bali during this period of time will show you how hundred years of tradition still live today.
The upcoming Galungan festival is 15 July 2015 until Kuningan in 25 July 2015.
